The Four Elements series

The Water Shawl

The knitted journey through the four elements continues with the Water shawl. This traditional triangle shawl is filled with gentle and easy lace patterns — all inspired by water. Can you see drops of rain? The wind blowing on the surface of a lake, and the waves of the sea?

I chose to knit my Water shawl with a fingering-weight yarn from my stash that mixes wool and silk [Old Maiden Aunt Yarns (50% merino, 50% silk; 400 yds / 366 m – 100 g), colourway Jaded]. You can substitute easily with other fingering-weight yarns, with our without silk. Sock yarns will work nicely as well. I just thought the slight sheen of the silk yarn added to the feeling of water, plus it feels a bit cooler on the skin in the summer – and adds to the drape.

The Water shawl is the second installement to my Four Elements shawl series. If you're looking for meditative knitting and exploring the world around us with your stitches, come explore the four elements – fire, water, earth and air – with me! The Fire shawl came out this spring and now the journey through the elements continues with the Water shawl.
